The Triton Track and Field Scoreboard
Triton Stadium, nestled in the north part of the UC San Diego campus, is home to a state-of-the-art track with an adjacent throwing facility that is considered by many to be among the best in the world. Yet, something vital is missing in the campus’ hub for NCAA track and field events: a functioning scoreboard.
Without an electronic scoreboard, race results cannot be viewed immediately during meets—of key importance to track and field athletes and spectators. A new electronic scoreboard will enable UC San Diego to host championships and share the facilities with community groups and high school teams that currently do not utilize UC San Diego’s venue for championship meets due to its lack of a competition-caliber scoreboard.
A new initiative has been launched to purchase a scoreboard for future student-athletes in memory of Triton alumna, Shannon Quigley Runningbear '91, one of UC San Diego’s most successful track and field athletes ever and a strong alumni advocate. About Shannon
Shannon Quigley Runningbear '91 was a two-time NCAA Division III National Champion in the shot put and the discus during her time as a Triton student-athlete. She also earned a National Championship with the women’s volleyball team. A stellar athlete and scholar, Shannon was a seven-time All-American and is still the record holder for discus at UC San Diego. She was honored as the university’s Female Athlete of the Year in 1991.
As an alumna, Shannon played an integral role in the building of UC San Diego’s RIMAC facility. She served on the Building Advisory Committee for three years, including one year as co-chair. Shannon passed away earlier this year.
